Kevin R. Horton is a trial lawyer whose practice is focused on civil litigation, primarily on the defense of medical negligence claims. Prior to joining Smyth Whitley, Kevin worked for a large Columbia, South Carolina personal injury firm, where he handled personal injury claims and workers' compensation matters. He has experience handling jury trials, contested administrative matters, appeals, and insurance coverage disputes.
Kevin grew up in Birmingham, Alabama and attended the University of Alabama, where he obtained bachelor’s and master's degrees in history. He moved to South Carolina to attend the University of South Carolina School of Law. While there, he was selected to the Order of the Barristers, the Moot Court National Competition Team, and the Southeastern Environmental Law Journal. He was also selected as a South Carolina Bar Association Public Interest Fellow and clerked for the Counsel to the Honorable Jean Hoefer Toal, former Chief Justice of the South Carolina Supreme Court. Kevin is admitted to practice before all of South Carolina's state and federal courts.
Kevin lives in North Charleston’s Park Circle with his wife, Cate, and two children, Adelaide and James. When not in the office, Kevin enjoys the outdoors with his family and pursues his interests in local and regional history.
